Fabricated Thermowell Pocket with Compression Gland
PPL50-TW thermowell pocket is a simple, easy to use fabricated sensor pocket for temperature probes. Pockets are generally used in liquid-filled applications where it is impractical to drain the system simply to replace a failed probe. The PPL50 is the simplest of all and comprises and closed-end stem welded into a stainless steel compression fitting.
The temperature probe pocket has an operating range of -75 to +800°C and is constructed from stainless steel.
Our high-quality TIG welding facility means that we can supply a pocket that means your needs. Choose from pocket diameter, pocket length and thread type. We will do the rest. We can also manufacture sensor pockets to suit other sensors that you may use such as dial thermometers, rod thermostats and bimetallic gauges.
When the sensor pocket is fitted into your application, simply slide the probe in, pushing it in so it makes contact at the tip. Then tighten the gland nut and olive to secure it in place.
The PPL50-TW thermocouple pocket is ideal for use with our PPL1 and PPL3 sensor designs.

What is a Thermowell Pocket?
A thermowell pocket, also known as a thermowell, is a protective housing or sheath used to enclose and shield a temperature sensor, such as a thermocouple or a resistance temperature detector (RTD). It is commonly used in industrial processes and systems to accurately measure temperature in environments that may be corrosive, high-pressure, or high-velocity.
The thermowell pocket is typically a cylindrical or tapered metal tube that is inserted into a process pipe or vessel. It is designed to isolate the temperature sensor from the process fluid or gas while allowing the sensor to accurately measure the temperature. The thermowell acts as a barrier, protecting the sensor from direct contact with the process media, which could be harmful to the sensor or affect its accuracy.
By using a thermowell, the temperature sensor can be easily removed or replaced without interrupting the process. It also provides a means for calibration or adjustment of the sensor if necessary. The thermowell pocket is often sealed at the process connection point to prevent leakage and maintain the integrity of the system.
The design and material of the thermowell pocket depend on the specific application and the conditions it will be exposed to. Factors such as temperature range, pressure, chemical compatibility, and flow rate need to be considered when selecting the appropriate thermowell for a particular process.
